ZABA

An album by Glass Animals

ZABA is Glass Animals’ debut studio album and was released on 9 June 2014 by Wolf Tone/Caroline International. It takes the listener to an exotic and dreamy reality through mysterious instrumentals and experimental lyrics.
Esthetically speaking, ZABA already has a cover that beautifully translates that sound through figures of animals, plants and colours that simulate a mystical forest. The goal with this project was to develop a different rendition of the album’s original artwork, with bolder colours, centred around a specific character created by me and, therefore, illustrate my personal experience when listening to the album.

BUILDING A HABITAT

After analysing the visual and conceptual language of Glass Animals, I became especially fascinated about the idea behind their second album cover art: “How to Be a Human Being”. Each one of the characters represented on the cover corresponds to one of the 11 songs on the album. Following that idea, I connected each one of the elements from the cover’s habitat to one of the songs on ZABA.

CLAYMATION

(TOTAL) 1 minute
(EDITOR) iMovie
(MUSIC) Intruxx by Glass Animals
(FRAMES) 400 with 0.3 seconds each

The animation was created as a way to explore a wide range of creative possibilities with a clay character, allowing me to experiment with this new medium and analyze various outcomes in both movement and narrative.

PROCESS

Clay was the chosen material to represent the anatomy and personality of the character since it’s flexible and easily moldable. with an opaque composition. I built a prototype in order to test the movement of arms and legs and the overall shape, as well as its thickness and colour arrangement. Prototyping was an essential step, as it allowed me to understand the importance of a wire skeleton to provide a stable structure and smoother body movements.
